How It Works

When a player types an address without a port, Minecraft Java Edition looks up the SRV record for that address (for play.example.com it reads _minecraft._tcp.play.example.com). If one exists, the game connects to the target host and port from that record. If not, it connects to the address itself on port 25565.

This tool reads the SRV record through public DNS, checks that the target host resolves to a public IP address, pings the server at that address and compares the answer from the domain's authoritative name server with answers from public DNS resolvers in many countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

An SRV record is a DNS record that tells Minecraft which host and port to connect to. It lets players join with a short address like play.example.com even when the server runs on a different port, for example 25577.

The DNS standard requires the target of an SRV record to be a hostname. Create an A record such as node.example.com that points to your server IP, then use that hostname as the SRV target.

No. Bedrock Edition ignores SRV records, so Bedrock players always have to enter the port by hand unless the server runs on the default port 19132.

Not reliably. Minecraft Java Edition uses the first record in the DNS answer and ignores priority and weight. Use a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord to spread players across servers.

A new record is usually visible within minutes. A changed record can stay cached until its TTL expires, which ranges from a few minutes to a day. Lower the TTL before planned changes so they spread faster.

Cloudflare's orange-cloud proxy only forwards web traffic. The A record used as the SRV target must be set to DNS only (grey cloud), otherwise players connect to a Cloudflare IP that does not forward Minecraft traffic.
